Research at York
We do research for many reasons such as:
- improving lives by ensuring we have a quality of life for as long as possible
- understand why things happen to us, the causation of disease
The development of new treatments and medical devices can take a long time, so often taking part in research is to help future generations, not just yourself.
There is a continuing need to keep research going as our population is growing and we are now living longer which means many of us are suffering from more than one medical problem at a time (co morbidities).
Research can take many forms; clinical trials are not the only way research happens. For example, just being interviewed about your condition, by a researcher, can help them really understand your condition, and what you'd like to happen to make things easier for you, this is called Qualitative Research. Other ways you can participate in research is to allow researchers access to your images or tissue, so they can investigate the workings of the human body easily. Finally, looking at anonymised data, from such things as lab results and hospital admissions can help us understand links and causation that sometimes would go un-noticed.
Working with academic researchers in universities is vital as they have the access to state of the art facilities and equipment that the NHS does not, that allows them to test things in different, more powerful ways. In addition, they have dedicated time to perform research, unlike busy clinicians. What academic researchers don't have though is clinical understanding of conditions, access to patients and their tissues and data, which is why all research active hospitals will work collaboratively with academics to work together on their research ideas.
We are currently research active in the following clinical areas but we are always on the lookout to develop research in new areas:
- Anaesthetics
- Cardiology
- Dermatology
- Diabetes
- Gastro
- Haematology
- Microbiology
- Obs & Gynae
- Oncology
- Ophthalmology
- Orthopaedics
- Paediatrics
- Renal

- Rheumatology
- Sexual Health
- Stroke
If you'd like to know more about any of these areas please click here
We have many nurses working for us, across the different directorates; our two Senior Research Nurses, who can be contacted if you'd like to find out more about our research, manage them.
